Left Bank refers to the west bank of the Gironde River, and is one of 2 major areas of the Bordeaux (the other being the Right Bank).  The most famous wine regions within the Left Bank area are St-Estephe, Pauillac, St. Julien and Margaux.  The area also includes the Médoc appellations.  A forest encompasses the the Left Bank, and the climate temperate climate it produces makes the area an ideal place for the cultivation of high quality red wine.

The soils of the Left Bank are gravel based, with lessened amounts of clay, which creates especially fertile ground for Cabernet Sauvignon.  However, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec grapes are also cultivated in the area.  The Left Bank is internationally famous for the quality of its dry red wines, with an emphasis on Cabernet Sauvignon.
